Physical
Education
During gym class at St. John’s we focus
on working together as a team. Each week we strive
to become stronger by performing push-ups and sit-ups
with our focus on learning proper technique. During
class activities it is important that classes work
together and encourage one another through teamwork
and good sportsmanship. Each week one class is rewarded
on how well they perform together as a team. As Catholics
our focus is to learn that people are different and
to respect those differences is important even through
physical fitness.
Spanish
The curriculum is modeled after the Archdiocesan
Course of Study. Children participate in speaking,
writing, and listening to conversational Spanish,
and develop an understanding of the cultural contexts
in which Spanish is spoken in our world. Students
learn basic conversational words and phrases, how
to tell time, the weather, their alphabet and numbers,
shapes, colors, basic verb usage and sentence construction,
basic prayers and how to describe themselves and those
around them. Special projects, like the making of
Spanish foods, help students to immerse themselves
more fully in the culture they are studying and to
have fun while learning.
Specials
All students in Kindergarten
through grade 8 receive weekly Physical Education,
Art, Music, Spanish and Computer classes.
Pre-K
The Saxon Early Learning Program is the center of
the Pre-K curriculum. The program integrates social,
personal, and emotional development, oral language
development, early literacy skills and a love of literature,
physical development and movement, health and safety,
math, science, social studies, and the fine arts.
The Saxon Program builds a strong phonemic awareness
as well as introduces students to the relationship
between letters and sounds.
