FOCE Teacher of the Year - Mrs. Peggy Frazier
St. John Regional Catholic School
Mrs. Peggy Frazier, music teacher extraordinaire, at St. John Regional Catholic School, in Frederick, Maryland, has been chosen by the faculty of St. John Regional Catholic School as our teacher of the year. She was awarded this honor at the Friends of Catholic Education dinner on January 27th.
Peggy brings her love of music to all of our students from PK to Grade 8. She directs our student chorus that has more than doubled in size since her arrival at St. John’s in 2008. She also directs our bell choir and holds weekly rehearsals for both of these groups. Mrs. Frazier joins Mr. Dave Metcalf, band director, in providing a complete music experience for our students.
Peggy attended Frederick Community College and graduated from Mount St. Mary’s College with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in music education at Mount St. Mary’s.
In addition to teaching music classes at SJRCS and directing our student musical groups, Peggy has also served as the Children’s Choir Director at St. John’s parish for almost twenty years. Her love for and knowledge of liturgical music is shared with our students when she prepares them to sing at our monthly school Masses. Each month, she collaborates with Mrs. Smith to ensure that our song choices are appropriate and uplifting for that month’s Mass theme.
But her responsibilities don’t stop there. She also plans, directs, and rehearses all of our students for our annual Christmas programs. These productions are always standing room only. Past themes include: Christmas Around the World, the Twelve Days of Christmas and Once Upon a Night. Peggy also helps to plan our annual Cultural Arts Evening that highlights both the visual and performing arts.
All of our third grade students learn how to play the recorder. Whether you are observing Peggy with Kindergarten students using bean bags and rhythm sticks OR 4th graders learning about American musical theater OR with middle school students learning about music theory by analyzing tempo and texture, you will certainly see her passion for the subject she teaches. Our students are exposed to a variety of musical genres such as baroque and American pop and introduced to the instruments of the orchestra. All at the able hands of Peggy Frazier, our teacher of the year, who embodies all of the qualities being looked for this award: She demonstrates a high level of expertise in her subject matter, She creates a warm, learning environment in the classroom, She is able to motivate students to want to learn; She makes a difference in the school environment through her leadership, dedication, and sense of humor.
That is why we are so proud to call Peggy Frazier our Teacher of the Year!
Congratulations, to Karen Roskowinski, who has been accepted in the Exploring the Efficacy of Elementary Engineering (E4) study. The E4 study aims to further our understanding of engineering in the elementary classroom and provide valuable data that twill inform the future of K-5 STEM curriculum development.
